Master Bedroom Sun Porch Makeover - Bohemian Style

sunroom sun porch 80s contemporary house spain hill farm

Remember this sun porch from our "new" house tour?  It's a small room off the master bedroom and the view makes one feel like you're in a tree house.

I knew the moment I stepped through the doors when viewing this house that this was going to be MY space.  My own little retreat to do my devotions, read books, take naps, hide from everyone.  Oops, did I say that out loud? :D

The first thing I had done was to hire a local window washing company to wash ALL the windows and skylights (there are 7..SEVEN in this house!)  It was actually more reasonable that I was expecting but I will say it may only be a once every year or two splurge.

The carpet is fairly new so I didn't have to replace the flooring in this area.  So I began with selecting a few furniture pieces...mainly, this amazing daybed from World Market and the blue rattan chair and ottoman from Wayfair.

Isn't it cool!?!  With the cedar siding exterior in this space, I felt a boho feel fit best with the wood.  And, my two favorite colors, blue and orange go right along with the boho look.

I found these beautiful blue velvet bolster pillows at Walmart.  They were about $16 each and look like ones that cost much more.  The other pillows I snagged from around the house.

After the furniture and bedding were done, I just had to finish it off with the wall decor.  One inexpensive way to fill a large space is to do a gallery wall.  The wall behind the daybed is a filled with straw hats I purchased at thrift store.  They make a big impact for about $20 total.

The side tables were purchased at a yard sale years ago and the rugs are from a local discount store that sells overstock merchandise from Target and Amazon.  Lots of great deals but you have to visit often before they're sold out.

So that's a wrap.  Now, I'm off to grab a mug of coffee and my favorite book.  You know where to find me if you need me!

Blessings!
Angie

Best of 2014 - A Year in Review

best of 2014 projects, the altered past blog

You guys, this has been an amazing year for The Altered Past and it's all thanks to you, my readers.  I'm so thankful for your taking time out of your day to read my blog.  It's both exciting and humbling at the same time.  I really do appreciate you all.

As a recap of 2014, I'm sharing my top 6 most viewed posts.  The ones you all chose as the best projects from this past year.  Let's do this David Letterman style starting with #6 first.

The sixth most viewed post for 2014 Is the Patio Set Redo that I made for my daughter's first apartment.  She moved in this past summer and the set has been providing a cozy sitting area for her front porch.  (Click on the photo to read the full post!)

The fifth most popular post from this past year is the Gumball Machine Snow Globe.  I think it's my favorite.  I put the snow globe in my china cabinet this past week instead of storing it away with the rest of the Christmas decorations.

Coming in at fourth is the Take-Out Boxes I made for our Thanksgiving guests.  I was honored to have this post featured in a Huffington Post article.  I'm still amazed that I found the take out trays at the Dollar Tree.  I love that store :)

The third most popular post of 2014 is a project that is somewhat special to me.  It's the Old Window Repurposed into a Chalkboard.  The window came from my in-laws home.  The chalkboard hangs in our den and I change out the message with the seasons or holidays.

Coming in at number 2 is an easy DIY project that I've done several times and will probably continue to do.  It's the Make Your Own Rubber Stamp post.  It doesn't take a lot of fancy materials.  You probably already have most of them in your home right now.  Click on the photo and check it out.  Then, get to making your own rubber stamps!

And, drum roll please, the most popular post for 2014 is the Pottery Barn Knockoff Grouted Pumpkins.  Another super easy project and the cost was less than $5!

There you have it!  The top 6 most popular post for 2014!  This could not have happened without you.  I appreciate each of you and I hope you will like what 2015 brings for The Altered Past.  I feel God has some pretty neat things in store for us.

Thanks for stopping by and God bless!!

Randomness

The weather was so nice this past weekend that I grabbed the camera one afternoon and just took some random shots.  I love living in the country...even though I complain sometimes about the drive in and out of town.  The complaint is short-lived once I'm home and remember why it is we live here.

Our fire pit area with makeshift benches of pallets and 2x4s and the old one my daughter made from logs and a pine board

The wood pile and old tub with our roasting sticks.

The old tree stump that once grew on the other side of the pond, died, fell, and floated to this side.  I love the way it's weathered.

Getting close to sunset.

An old, orange cylinder...love the color and graphics.

My frog statue, just hanging out behind the shed until he can sit by the pond again next spring.

Shutters with star cut-outs, jelly jar porch lights, and a corrugated metal flag on the shed.

And, last but not least, with the last of the sunlight, milkweed blooms, ready to fly.

I hope you enjoyed the randomness of this post.  I appreciate your stopping by and God bless!

Patio Set Redo

Post contains an affiliate link

patio sling chair, easy diy recover project
Do you have an old patio set that includes sling chairs?  I picked up this set free from someone that was ready to trash it.

Here's a before photo.  Not too bad.  The green paint has faded and the fabric is somewhat brittle and beginning to rip.

There were also areas of rust that I sanded.

I removed all of the screws which detached the seat and back from the chair frame.  Once the seat and back are off the frame, you can pop off the plastic caps from one end and slide the old fabric out of the track.  The four pieces behind the chair in the photo are the tracks.  I chose a flat gray primer to cover the rusted areas and because it matched the color scheme of the new fabric. (Do you recognize my "spray paint mat" from this post? I decided to keep it for this reason.)  The fabric is Sunbrella and you can find Sunbrella and others on Amazon under outdoor fabrics or you can find woven fabric for the chairs HERE for $8 a yard.

I didn't photograph the sewing step but there are several YouTube tutorials as well as Pinterest pages that show how to make the new seat and back inserts.  I'm not a seamstress by any means so my instructions would probably be wrong on so many levels to those that know what they are doing. :)

I will say that I double stitched all of the seams and created a channel for the nylon rod that helps thread the fabric through the track as well as securing it in the track when tension is put on the finished seat/back.

Putting the finished pieces back into the frame was very easy.  My husband helped me reattach the tracks to the frame.  Just be sure to slowly increase the tension evenly among the 4 screws.

And that's it!  You've got a new look for very little money.  Since the set was free, I spent less that $25 on 3 cans of spray paint and 1.5 yards of fabric.  This set found a home at my daughter's new place.  I dropped it off this morning without her knowing it.  After I left, I texted her that she needed to check her front porch because it could really use a plant or something.  (It's a tiny porch, I know.  I think I've seen wider sidewalks!)

Don't forget you can add a pin to Pinterest from any of the photos and keep this info for your next patio chair project!

Thanks for stopping by and God bless!
