Dreaming in Color - A Fun, Artsy Store in Murfreesboro TN

This week, our Nashville area bloggers group met at this incredible store located right here in Murfreesboro.  Dreaming In Color is owned by Deneen Glidwell and is located just down the street from the historic Oaklands Mansion.  It's full of great furniture pieces, vintage items, and lots of handcrafted art.

Let's take a look!

Loved this piece!  Unfortunately, it was already sold.

Cute wall decor!

Weird shot of the wall between two rooms...I was trying to get the cool arrow sign.  Almost got it.

These amazing pieces are made by Lucy Inspired.
Love the way she mixes old found objects in her jewelry pieces.

What don't I love about this display...gorgeous cabinet, boxwood wreath, and ironstone.

I think this was my favorite of all the items.
This is my year to follow my dream...and I'm going for it!

If you're in the Murfreesboro area, be sure to check out Dreaming In Color located on N. Maney Avenue, located in the historic area.  I found out last night that Deneen's building has quite a history behind it and there are close local ties to Judy Garland even.  Pretty cool, huh?

Thanks for stopping by and God bless!

DIY Business Cards

I told you that I recently attended my first blogging conference, Haven.  What I didn't share were my business cards that I made prior to Haven.

I didn't make the actual business card.  I ordered those but what I did make were the business card holders and swag that I attached to each card.  So here's how I did it:

Ordered some snazzy business cards with all my perts.

Dug through my stashes of old handwritten recipe cards

Located one awesome Martha Stewart paper punch.

This paper punch doesn't punch all the way through.  Some of the flower image is still attached, allowing it to make a 3D effect.  See? Awesome.

I punched the card in opposite corners which made the perfect slot to hold my business card.  But, just to be sure my card didn't slip out, I added a piece of washi tape :)

Now, the card was looking great but I needed to add a little something to hold some swag.  I found this!  A small manila coin envelope.  Perfect size to add to the card.

However, the little envelope was just a (yawn) plain...cute but plain.  So, I pulled out my rubber stamps and found just the right one.  I carved this bee stamp a few years ago and have become somewhat addicted to carving rubber stamps.  (I'll be creating a video soon so that you can carve you very own too!)

Under the bee, I wrote "yourself"...get it "bee yourself!"

Time to finish it off and add a little goody to the envelope.  I hole punched the envelope after enclosing a small individually wrapped mint that I picked up from the wedding section of Michaels.  Threaded some twine through the opening in the top flower punch on the card and the hole in the envelope to tie everything together.  Now, they're ready to start handing out!  Oh, wait...

Because we DIYers are never satisfied, I had to create another stamp with another saying.  In this one, I carved a Ball mason jar because don't all home/lifestyle bloggers love mason jars?!  The message here was "Have a Ball" at the conference, at home, at life...whatever you do.

I hope this sparked some ideas for you.  I enjoyed sharing these cards at Haven...all 50+ of them.  The greatest part was that in exchange, I received 50+ cards from all the great bloggers that I met.

Now, I have to interrupt our post to mention this.  The first Ball jar stamp that I carved was totally awesome.  That is until I inked it up and stamped my first envelope.  Do you know the first rule in stamping words or lettering??  Yep, it has to be mirror image.  It actually took me a third try to get the lettering and a jar shape that I was happy with.  See, we all have those less than perfect attempts at doing things.  Kind of like Babe Ruth, the Sultan of Swat.  Did you know he was also once known as the King of Strikeouts?  Yep.  Michelangelo said, "If people only knew how hard I work to gain my mastery, it wouldn't seem so wonderful at all."  No one gets it right the first time, everytime.  It does take work but it also takes allowing yourself to fail in the attempt.  So, even though I love sharing beautiful projects, I also want you to see that they don't just happen.  There are a lot of "fails" beforehand.  Beginning this Friday, I am going to begin a regular post entitled "Reality Check".  Believe me when I say, I have lots to share in this area.

Thanks for stopping by and God bless!!

Haven 2014 Highlights

I attended Haven 2014, my first blogging conference, last week.  I have to confess as the conference was approaching I was feeling pretty anxious about attending.  Like I am an amateur.  They are all pros.  Like I was a poser and would be found out.

What should I wear?

What does one (who's trying to not look like a total dork) bring to a blogging conference??

Forget it!!  I'm not going.

Wait, what?!?

Really.  I felt like backing out.  Why do we let doubts and fears paralyze us from doing what we really want to do?

source

I pushed aside those feelings and just went for it.  I'm s-o-o-o glad I did.  The other ladies (and few gents) there were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and helpful.

Here are some of the great things I would have missed had I given in to those fears:

Chip Wade, designer/builder/rock star of HGTV's Elbow Room, spoke to us the first morning.  He said to always begin a design with "what if?"  What if this could...?  What if we could...?  It obviously works.  His designs are taking-it-to-the-next-level amazing.  He also answered any questions we had...like "how can I get you to do a room at my house?!" Lol!  Seriously, I have a laundry room/deck situation that could really use his help.

Ready for this next one?

Oh yeah, that's the one and only Mike Holmes.  Mike talked to us about creating a safer and healthier home.  Thanks 3M Filtrete for sponsoring!

There were so many great sessions to attend that I didn't make it to all of them.  Just a sampling of the workshops I attended were hosted by these rockstars of the blogging world:  Andy Marzka of Adthrive.com (thank you, thank you, thank you for explaining ad optimization to me!!), Laura Putnam of Finding Home, Dusty Rogers of All Things G&D, Jen Schmidt of Balancing Beauty & Bedlam, and Erin Spain of DIY on the Cheap (thank you ladies for explaining the basics of blogging and for encouraging us along!)  I could go on and on because there were so many incredible speakers and workshops offered.

I can't talk about Haven without talking about the gracious sponsors that help make it happen.  The sponsors were spreading the love when it came to swag.  If you've ever read a post about Haven that says to pack an extra bag to haul your swag back on the plane...believe them.

It's a good thing we drove ;)  These products were provided by:  +MinwaxUSA+FrogTape+OnlineFabricStore.net, Thompson Water Seal, +PureBond+Ballard Designs+ProcterGamble+The Home Depot+Southern Living+Gorilla Glue, Duct Tape, Rustoleum, Sizzix, and more!  Thank you sponsors!!!

This post could go on at length about how great Haven 2014 was.  I'm sure I'll be talking about it for some time but to sum it up, if you're considering going next year...DO IT!  I promise you will not regret a minute of it.

So, I'm going to shut up now and just close with these:

+GMC Denali was a big sponsor too!  #thisisgmc

Three great project kits delivered to my room from +The Home Depot  Check back to see the finished projects!

Beautiful room displays by +Ballard Designs

Ok, that's enough.  I'll be posting more great things from Haven 2014 soon.  Thanks for stopping by and God bless!

Home from Haven Conference 2014

Whew!  What a whirlwind of 350+ bloggers all meeting in the same place with some AWESOME sponsors at every turn.

I just returned (a day early, sadly) from my first ever blogger conference, Haven 2014.  I mean, literally, I just returned and couldn't wait to start sharing.  It's getting late here but I want to give you a little teaser of the great things I brought home.

Check out the SWAG!

I know, right!  Do these sponsors know how to spoil a girl or what?

Everyone at Haven was incredibly friendly, helpful, and downright amazing.  I can't wait to begin sharing about it but right now, this girl needs some much needed sleep.

Thanks for stopping by and God bless!
