Master Bedroom Sun Porch Makeover - Bohemian Style

sunroom sun porch 80s contemporary house spain hill farm

Remember this sun porch from our "new" house tour?  It's a small room off the master bedroom and the view makes one feel like you're in a tree house.

I knew the moment I stepped through the doors when viewing this house that this was going to be MY space.  My own little retreat to do my devotions, read books, take naps, hide from everyone.  Oops, did I say that out loud? :D

The first thing I had done was to hire a local window washing company to wash ALL the windows and skylights (there are 7..SEVEN in this house!)  It was actually more reasonable that I was expecting but I will say it may only be a once every year or two splurge.

The carpet is fairly new so I didn't have to replace the flooring in this area.  So I began with selecting a few furniture pieces...mainly, this amazing daybed from World Market and the blue rattan chair and ottoman from Wayfair.

Isn't it cool!?!  With the cedar siding exterior in this space, I felt a boho feel fit best with the wood.  And, my two favorite colors, blue and orange go right along with the boho look.

I found these beautiful blue velvet bolster pillows at Walmart.  They were about $16 each and look like ones that cost much more.  The other pillows I snagged from around the house.

After the furniture and bedding were done, I just had to finish it off with the wall decor.  One inexpensive way to fill a large space is to do a gallery wall.  The wall behind the daybed is a filled with straw hats I purchased at thrift store.  They make a big impact for about $20 total.

The side tables were purchased at a yard sale years ago and the rugs are from a local discount store that sells overstock merchandise from Target and Amazon.  Lots of great deals but you have to visit often before they're sold out.

So that's a wrap.  Now, I'm off to grab a mug of coffee and my favorite book.  You know where to find me if you need me!

Blessings!
Angie

Hey, remember me?! Spain Hill Farm is back to blogging!

Hope y’all have been doing well! It’s been awhile since I last posted, let me share a little about
what’s happened in the past year; 2018 was quite the year, filled with all the ups and downs
that life throws at you. We were confronted with unexpected death and illnesses, but we were
also blessed with two weddings (my oldest and middle daughters got married about 10 weeks
apart!)  and a new (to us) home!

Becoming empty nesters last year got us thinking that it was about time to downsize, and when
we had a family knock on our door interested in buying our house, we decidedto dive right into
house hunting once again. We really loved the area we were currently living in, so we focused
our search in the surrounding neighborhoods, primarily in an older, established neighborhood
beautifully perched up in some hills with tons of huge trees! Low and behold, an 80’s
contemporary wood-sided home came on the market. My family immediately fell in love with
what they called the “Brady Bunch” house, they loved the multi-level layout that was perfect for
Nerf gun wars; I, on the other hand, needed a little convincing. After a lot of prayer and thought,
we decided to put an offer on the Brady Bunch house, and at the beginning of August (just a
couple of weeks before one of our daughter’s weddings) we moved in!

Now when I say 80’s contemporary, I mean 80’s contemporary! Ready to see pics?!

Beautiful DIY Barnwood Bathroom

beautiful barnwood bathroom with reclaimed barn door

If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, you may have seen the sneak peek of the bathroom that my friend, Jan, and her husband, Chris, built.

We were at their house for a 4th of July party which gave me the perfect opportunity to slip away from the festivities and grab some pics of her cool bathroom to share with you.  Beware, I am that friend.

Two Great Bedrooms for Teenagers

two great bedroom ideas for teenagers

We have three girls, two of them still in their teenage years.  Decorating a bedroom for this age can be challenging.  You don't want anything too young nor too old.  My friend, Julie, has two girls in their teens too.  She recently made over both of their rooms, even making most of the furniture!  She's like super talented in all things DIY.

I twisted her arm into allowing me to share their rooms and her talents with you!

Gardening Tips from Southern Gardeners

Last week I, along with a group of other area bloggers, got to attend a wonderful preview tour of the Nashville Symphony Show House.  It's a beautiful home to say the least.

You can take the tour with me here, if you missed it.

As a part of the preview, our group was treated to a session with Carmen Johnston to make our own container gardens.  Yes, that's the Carmen Johnston of Southern Living Plants and Carmen Johnston Gardens.

nashville symphony house, home tour

Recently I was invited to a special preview of the Nashville Symphony Show House along with an amazing group of bloggers, the Nashville Influencers.

Ya'll, this home is gorgeously comfortable.  Ok, that's not a real term from an interior design textbook but I'm declaring it a real term right now.  You read it hear first!

This quintessential Southern Contemporary Folk home was created by top Nashville interior designers that have partnered with the award-winning team of Castle Homes and Wade Weissmann Architecture for Music City's newest signature event, the Nashville Symphony Show House, open for tour June 12-28 in the Forest Hills area of Nashville.

Castle Homes hosted our tour today along with a garden party with garden lifestyle expert and Southern Living Magazine Contributing Garden Editor Carmen Johnston along with the iconic Miss Daisy King and PBS Volunteer Gardener Troy Marden, author of "Southern Gardener's Handbook."

Hello again!  See, I told ya, gorgeously comfortable or was it comfortably gorgeous.  Either way, it's a beautiful home.  If you're in the Nashville area, be sure to check it out.  Here's a link to Castle Homes with the details.  Many thanks to them, Forest Home Media, Miss Daisy King, Carmen Johnston Gardens, and Troy Marden for making this a great event.

Oh, are you wondering about the new header and blog name?  Yeah, I'm tinkering with changing The Altered Past to Spain Hill Farm. Since my blog is more about my home decorating and DIY projects instead of my altered art, I felt a change was necessary.

More on the change soon.  You'll probably notice a few new graphics as I'm still tweaking everything.  I'm too impatient to get it all figured out before uploading so you can experience the decision making process with me.  Thanks friends!!

God bless!

An Organized Workroom Part 2

workroom studio organization, craft, the altered past blog

Welcome back!  I'm so glad you joined me for part two of my Organized Workroom post.  If you missed part 1, you can check it out here:  An Organized Workroom Post 1

Today, I'm showing you more of the storage methods I use in my workroom.  Since I do altered art projects along with my DIY home projects, it requires hoarding keeping lots of various doodads, tchotchkes, treasures.  My family would probably disagree but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Seriously, it's not really hoarding if it's organized, right???  Nevermind, don't answer that.

Jars and jars of treasures...buttons, knobs, die, keys, dominoes, clothespin, tags, and more!

Whew!  That was quite a tour.  Thank you for sticking around to the end.  I hope you find some inspiration and ideas for your own workroom!

God bless!

Kings' Chapel Holiday Parade of Homes

Last week, I was privileged to attend a blogger meet and greet at the Kings' Chapel Holiday Parade of Homes in Arrington, Tennessee.  Wow, the jaw dropping beauty begins as you enter through the gates.

Entry by Arrington Design-Build Firms Kings Chapel Community

I, along with about 30 other bloggers, toured four gorgeous homes built by Tennessee Valley Homes, Gregg & Rains, Arnold Homes, and Drees Homes.  There were so many great decorating ideas, it was almost overwhelming!  Almost ;)

Grab a cup of something and let's take a look!  (By the way, my camera/phone battery died after 3 photos so I'm sharing some gorgeous photos taken by a new blogger friend, Cindy of DIY Beautify.)

This beautiful dining room was amazing.  The wall treatment is a mix of media to achieve this unique concrete finish.  It really is incredible.  It's the creation of Bella Tucker Decorative Finishes.

DIY Beautify

The walls in this bedroom were one of my favorite.  I love navy blue.  This paneled look is on my list of techniques to use in one of our rooms.  Of course, then I'd need to get an old iron bed and those killer barn doors.

Ok, THIS room...I've got dibs on this room!  It wasn't huge but it was so warm and cozy!  Add a small coffee maker and I would be set for hours of blog work.  Sigh.   My workroom wants to be this room when it grows up.  OH!  And, it had a hidden room behind the paneling...a safe room :)

Well, I could post tons of great pictures from the Parade of Homes but you NEED to go see these homes for yourself.  Proceeds from the ticket sales are going to the Middle Tennessee Make-A-Wish Foundation.  An awesome organization that has made the wishes of so many come true over the years.

Along with the ticket sales, there is a silent auction for 4 Balsam Hill trees that have been decorated by 4 rock star bloggers, Kari Anne of Thistlewood Farms, Jenna of Rain on a Tin Roof, Kristie of The Decorologist, and Lesley of Chaotically Creative.  Each tree's theme was chosen by one of the Make-A-Wish recipients.

A great big thanks to Cindy of DIY Beautify and Candice of She's Crafty for the use of their beautiful photos.  Hop over and check them out!

Thanks for stopping by and God bless!
