A Hunt Themed Office Makeover

I've been wanting to makeover my office (aka dining room) for a while now.  It had potential to be a nice space but the busyness of life and my own procrastination had left it unorganized and less than pleasing looking.

Well, fast forward to a few weeks ago when I found an amazing antique table online (for $25 including chairs, crazy, I know!) AND then Edie, my 18 year old daughter, mentioned her interest in interior decorating, more specifically learning staging for real estate.  Hello makeover time!!

So, let's look at the unorganized, no-plan BEFORE photos:

We began by removing everything from the walls, putting extra tchotchkes in totes, and patching nail holes.  My favorite pieces that remained all had a similar theme...dogs and horses...so a hunt theme seemed obvious. 

Next, we decided to move the bookcases on a different wall to elongate the room.  I liked them flanking the window but it did make the room seem smaller.  We also added a 6-foot shelf between the two bookcases to create a type of credenza behind my desk.

Beautiful new table - notice the pull ring on the right side.  It releases a leaf that pops up in the middle of the table!  Cool design

Copper Scottie dog is a recent thrift store find...LOVE him!

These round brass frames were found at a thrift store many years ago.  I don't know the history of them but they have convex glass in them.  I added a textured paper background and glued vintage toy horses inside each one.

This tole planter has a simple design on one side.  I added my initials using a gold paint pin to the other side.  

The bookends were ordered from Joss & Main. 

I found these prints at Goodwill a couple of years ago and loved them.  They were $7.99 each.  The horse hook in the middle is from Hobby Lobby's clearance section (love their clearance items!) and the old horse bit was picked up at the scrap yard.

This!  This candle is a-m-a-z-i-n-g!  My all time favorite scent that smells good all year round.  I get mine locally but you can find them at Anthropologie or a little cheaper on Amazon.

I have to clarify here.  This beautiful makeover was done pretty much by Edie.  I think she's got an eye for decorating and a bright future ahead.

Turn a Wine Rack into a Standing Gun Rack

Back in July when I attended Haven, a blogging conference, Home Depot gave out these wooden wine rack kits.

Well, it was a nice gift but I had a metal wine rack at home and didn't really need another one.  So, the kit sat.  For months.  Until, I began planning for Thanksgiving.  When we host Thanksgiving every other year for my in-laws, it always involves skeet shooting in our back field.

My daughter shoots competitively for an area high school team and this past year I noticed they have a standing gun rack at the range.  AND, the top of the rack looks very similar to the wine rack.  The light bulb went off!  I would turn the wine rack into a standing gun rack to use at Thanksgiving.

Here's what I started with:

The Wine Rack Kit (thanks to http://www.attemptsatdomestication.com/ for the photo.  I forgot to get a before.)

I didn't need the two side pieces from the kit but I did use 6 32" pieces of 2x4s and several scrap pieces of wood for reinforcing.  I also used 2 3-inch hinges, a latch, and a simple handle.  The last two are optional.

I began by adding a scrap piece of wood to the backs of the two rack pieces.  I applied carpenter's glue to each piece before screwing them together from the back.

Next, I cut a notch in the end of 2 2x4's in order for the top rack piece to sit flush.   These were also glued before screwing the pieces together.  This was done on both ends of the 2 rack pieces.

After the sides are done, mark the inside measurements on to another 2x4, cut to length, and attach with glue and screws to the bottom of the sides.  You should have a box shape for each side of the gun rack when completed.

Stand the pieces back to back and mark where you want the hinges to go.  Attach them to the inside, between the two pieces.  It should look like them when done.

Now, break out the wood filler and fill like crazy!

Wood filler has dried and the first coat of paint applied.  I used Rustoleum 2x Ultra spray paint in hunter green...because, you know, this green is for hunters! :)

Oops!  I almost forgot to mention!  See that wood piece across the back at the bottom of each side?  That was more scrap wood that I attached to keep the butt of the guns from slipping through.  Just cut to length and attach with screws.  It will also help reinforce the bottom structure.

Ready to see it all done and ready for use?!

I did add orange felt to the inside of the rack.  It took just one $.25 piece of felt :)

And, the handle and latch.  These are optional but they do make carrying and storing much easier.

After the Hunt Tablescape

Hello and welcome to this stop on the fall blog tour.  Our first week's theme is tablescape.  If you're popping over from The Striped House or Concord Cottage, I'm glad you're here!  If you missed the first two posts, you can check them out at The Striped House and Concord Cottage.

My tablescape is a little out of the box.  I wanted to do a hunt version of a tailgate picnic.  I've always loved plaids and tartan prints so pulling this together was pretty easy from things I had around the house.  Warning:  this post is loaded with photos so you may want to grab a cup of coffee before we get started.

Ready?  Good, let's go!

This is set in my back field (which looks prettier in photos thanks to strategic staging!)  I used an old farm table along with two folding camp stools for the dining area.  Everything, except for the Tilley hat, came from thrift stores.  I pick up plaid wool throws whenever I find them.

The tailgate of our old (early 80s) truck was used for a serving area.  You may notice my DIY pendant lights that I posted about here.

Did you know you can check with local wine and liquor stores to see if they have any wooden boxes??  I check one frequently in my area.  He's always glad to pass along any he has sitting around.  The Jack Daniels box was a display box that originally had clear plexiglass in the front.  I removed the plexiglass and painted it on the reverse side with #Krylon Looking Glass paint.  I love that stuff!  And, I love how the box turned out.  It reminds me of a vintage bar mirror.

I also hoard, uh, collect vintage plaid thermos and picnicware.  (I also have a blue plaid set just for tailgating at my daughter's college)  :)

The fowl barware glasses are a set I picked up at the thrift store, along with the decanter.  There is actually something in the decanter but I used gin, which happens to be clear.  Bad planning.  (I actually have to interject here...I love vintage barware and an occasional fruity drink but gin...blech! Sorry gin drinkers.  I'm not sure why we had gin in the first place so I wasn't too upset to pour it out after this.) 

The bamboo cane...$1 at the thrift store.  I'm telling you, if you don't shop thrift stores, you're missing some great stuff!

You've got to have your compass when hunting...as well as a bug book and magnifying glass.  Ok, maybe some serious hunters out there would leave the bug book and magnifying glass behind.

Soup and chili are two great tailgating dishes.  Use a variety of thermoses and attach labels with the contents.

The old crock jar holding the vintage silverware belonged to my grandparents.

The sun was just about to set but it was making for some great last minute photos before the light was gone.
