This Blog Journey We're On Together

I guess you've noticed the new header and the new NAME!  I'm so excited to finally make the change.  I've debated and hem-hawed about it for a long time.  Well.  No time like the present, right?

An Organized Workroom Part 2

workroom studio organization, craft, the altered past blog

Welcome back!  I'm so glad you joined me for part two of my Organized Workroom post.  If you missed part 1, you can check it out here:  An Organized Workroom Post 1

Today, I'm showing you more of the storage methods I use in my workroom.  Since I do altered art projects along with my DIY home projects, it requires hoarding keeping lots of various doodads, tchotchkes, treasures.  My family would probably disagree but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Seriously, it's not really hoarding if it's organized, right???  Nevermind, don't answer that.

Jars and jars of treasures...buttons, knobs, die, keys, dominoes, clothespin, tags, and more!

Whew!  That was quite a tour.  Thank you for sticking around to the end.  I hope you find some inspiration and ideas for your own workroom!

God bless!

An Organized Workroom Part 1

workroom organization, the altered past blog

Well, I finally got my workroom organized!  Nothing like posting those ugly before photos (see the post here) to make me get my tail in gear.  I should try this tactic more often.

After I got everything cleaned up, organized, and photographed, I realized I had about a bazillion pics to share.   So, instead of being that person that pulls out the slide projector and subjects you to a ton of vacation pictures, I'm breaking this up into two posts.

Before we jump into my newly organized workroom, I thought I'd share a little about it.  When we moved to the country almost 10 years ago, I decided the shed that was on the property would be a great place for my art studio.

I painted the walls inside, bought a little woodburning stove to heat it during the winter, bought a really l-o-n-g vintage cast iron sink to use for washing paint brushes (and the occasional dirty dog).  I bought cute curtains and dreamed of planting an herb garden outside the front door.  It was coming right along until...

Yeah, in my own little world, this was somewhat devastating but compared in real life to those that lost much, much more from that flood.  It's was just an inconvenience.  We ended up burning practically everything that was in the shed.  And, quickly decided the shed was not a safe place for my art studio.

So now, I have a little 10 x 10 room that my husband built me in our basement garage.  It's actually cozy and now it's organized!  Come on in!

Thanks for stopping by and God bless!

My DIY Workroom - UNEDITED

workroom studio, the altered past blog

How's your new year going?  Are you taking this time of the year to get organzied?  I'm trying.  I've got a list of areas to work on.  One of them being my workroom.  Today I'm going to share some pictures that my sister-in-law took at Thanksgiving.  Prepare yourself...these are unedited photos of my little (10x10) workroom.

Come on in!  That is, if you can get in.  Excuse the pile of fabric spilling out of my vintage shopping cart.  Oh, and be careful of the pile of tobacco sticks in the corner.

Good, you're in!  Maybe we should do this one at a time.  You go ahead and look around.  It is crowded but my little "fireplace" heater does keep it warm and cozy.

I found this cabinet on Craigslist for $70.  It's a 1970's stereo cabinet that I gutted and painted to use for storage.  I loved the shape and the fact that I could hide some of my supplies behind the covered doors.

This former china cabinet came from a friend that was looking to just get it out of her house.  I like when friends get in that mood.

I use lots of jars for storing little items.  Most of these are supplies for my altered art pieces.  Umm, this cabinet could really use some organizing.  (On the list)

And, well, glitter is just so sparkly and blingy it needs fancy bottles to store it in.

Well, there you have it.  My messy, unedited workroom in desperate need of some organizing.  I hope to be soon with the after pictures!

Thanks for stopping by!  Who's next to go in?  ;)

God bless,
Angie

Make a Snow Globe Picture

I love snow globes and making your own is really easy.  I made several years ago using old mason jars and found objects.  You can see that post HERE.

.

They are kind of addicting to make.  So after having made several with jars, I decided to try something new this year.  I came across a plastic shadow box frame at the thrift store and thought it would be cool to make into a snow globe picture!  It worked!

Here's the things you'll need to make your own:  a shadow box frame with glass, a few small found objects for your snow globe scene, scrapbook paper for the background, glue, loose plastic snow (found mine at Hobby Lobby), and some tape to seal the back.

My found objects are 2 triangle pieces from an old building blocks set, a small plastic moose from the dime store, and vintage punch out letters that spell S-N-O-W.  You could use anything from small Christmas village trees and people, children's toys, gumball machine toys, whatever :)

Arrange your objects in the box and glue them in place once you're happy with it.

After you have everything glued in place and the glue has dried, attach the back of the frame leaving one side slightly open.  Pour a small amount of the loose plastic snow into the opening, checking often to see when you have added enough.

Finish securing the frame back and then seal with washi (or other light tack) tape.  This is just in case some of the smaller particles of snow slip out of the back.

That's it!  You're finished!  Easy peesy and would make a cute gift for teachers, co-workers, etc.  Think about what you could put in them...the possibilities are endless!

This would be an easy and inexpensive craft to do with your kids or grandkids!  I'm going to be hunting down more shadow box frames.  How about you?

Thanks for stopping by and God bless!!

#TBT Throwback Thursday at The Altered Past

I've never done a #TBT Throwback Thursday post...not even on Facebook that I can remember.  However, when I was thinking about what to blog next, my daughter said, "Why don't you do a throwback post to your old posts?"  Yeah!  Why not?

Recently, a group of bloggers were asked why they chose their blog names.  Mine, of course, is The Altered Past.  I chose that name because, way back in 2009, I began blogging about my altered art.  So, I'm throwing it to 2009 for this #TBT.  (I had to laugh as some of my early blog photos...kinda like laughing at the 80s big hair days...which I also had!)

Altered art is sort of a collage of mixed media.  My pieces were created out of old, found objects, and the older they were the better.

So you can get an idea of what I'm talking about here are a couple of altered albums I made using the lunch size paper bags. (Forgive the poor quality photos...see, I was a total newbie to it all.)

This was the "Mommy and Me" albums I made.  Matching albums, loaded with old recipes, pieces from a sewing pattern, scrapbook paper, old clothes pins, and the spine of each album is a vintage kitchen utensil, full size and child size.

Here's another paper bag album with a vintage circus theme.  I learned a lot about the early days of the circus while making this one.  Did you know that instead of saying "break a leg" clowns say "bump a nose"...love it!

Also, when the circus was performing in the last city of the tour, they hung their fliers upside down.  After that, everyone knew they were heading home.

I also made altered art by recycling Altoid's cans.  This western themed one was my favorite but the photos are on an old laptop that crashed.  Lesson learned...always back up your files :)

After the paper bag albums and Altoid's tins, I began making altered art snowmen out of vintage bottles and other objects.  This guy's name is Joey.  I never sold him because he was my first.  Others I've sold or given away.  I still make these from time to time.  I'm actually working on one right now for fall.

So anyway, my blog name came about because of the altered art projects I was creating at the time.  Now, fast forward a few years, I'm not making as much altered art but I still love changing things from the past.  So, my blog name sort of fit what I'm still doing today.

I love thrift store shopping and I love finding vintage items that aren't quite popular yet (because they're still cheaper and easier to find!)  Repurposing those things (like the mercury glass pumpkins) satisfies my craving to create.  Like I said in my Blogland Tour post.  I've just got to create.  It's a part of me.

I hope you enjoyed Throwback Thursday and looking back with me at the early days of my blog.  Thanks for stopping by and God bless!!

Angie
